Join us for an awe-inspiring adventure on the beautiful water of the Nicoya Peninsula! Our whale watching tours offer a unique oppertunity to witness the magestic humpback whales in their natural habitat. Whether you are seasoned marine enthusiast or exploring the wonders of the ocean for the first time, our tours promise an unforgettable experience.

Costa Rica is one of the few places on Earth visited by two distinct populations of humpback whales. Because of its location, the waters near Paquera and the surrounding Gulf of Nicoya host whales from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres:

* Northern Hemisphere Whales: These giants arrive from the coasts of Alaska and California, typically appearing between December and March.

* Southern Hemisphere Whales: Traveling all the way from Antarctica, these whales visit during the southern winter, staying from July to November. 

   This second window is generally considered the "peak" season for sightings in Costa Rica.

Why Paquera?

The warm, relatively shallow, and protected waters of the Gulf of Nicoya provide an ideal environment for humpback whales. They do not come here to feed—as there is little of their primary food source (krill) in tropical waters—but rather to breed and give birth.

For mother whales, the calm waters near the peninsula offer a safe haven from predators like orcas, allowing their calves to build up the blubber necessary for the long journey back to colder waters. For visitors, this means sightings often include heartwarming displays of mothers teaching their calves how to breach, tail-slap, and dive. 

After the whale watching we are heading to the island Isla Tortuga - Playa Tropical where you can enjoy a swim in the warm waters or stroll along the sugary white sandy beach or relax in the shadow of a swaying palm tree.

Duration: +/- 4 hours (+/- 3 hours of whale watching and +/- 1 hour beach time on playa Tropical of Isla Tortuga)
